“HEY.”

Danni’s voice made Seth look up. Putting down the board he was nailing, he straightened his back and swept the hat from his head. “Morning.”

“I think I’m supposed to be helping.” She pointed at the board. “Should I grab that end?”

“Yeah.”

Moving past Seth, Danni lifted the board. “Level?”

“Level,” he answered. He stepped past her, and the fresh scent of honeysuckle drifted over him. Pulling a nail end on the board, Seth found he had to concentrate in order to drive it home. “One more.”

“One more,” she agreed.

Working together, they made progress around the corral. Once the last board was nailed, Seth stood and brushed the layer of moisture from his face.

“Good job,” Danni exclaimed. “Now, no worries about the horses.”

“You had worries?” Seth asked.

“I hear one of my mares likes to take midnight strolls over to your property.”

“Oh, yeah,” Seth gave a nod.

“Well, would you like to see your stallion’s little one?” She shrugged.

“Little one?”

Danni grinned. “Come on; let me introduce you to Evening Star.”

Seth followed her into the barn and over to the box stall. Pushing his hat back, he stared at the three-day old filly who seemed just as interested in him.

“I think she’s beautiful, don’t you?”

He nodded. “She’s got a lot of her daddy’s conformation.”

“And her momma’s good looks,” Danni added. “Major thinks she’ll be a winner if trained right.”

They watched as the filly gave a swish of her tail and turned back to her momma to nurse.

“So, you named her Evening Star.”

Danni nodded. Her arms folded over the top rail of the stall, and she stared down at the baby. “It seemed appropriate. I understand your stallion is Star. Momma’s name is Midnight. She is as dark as the night.”

“I like it.”

She turned and offered a radiant smile.

Seth was struck by her natural beauty. The more he stared, the more he realized she wasn’t even wearing make-up. “So, do you like it here?”

“I do.” Danni rubbed her nose with her arm. “At first, I was so scared to come. Now, I can’t think of living anywhere else. There’s something about the people of Bliss. They are genuine down to earth folks.”

“That they are,” he agreed.

“I can’t imagine any of my grandmother’s friends coming out here like this. It would be too easy for them to hire someone. They don’t like to get their hands dirty.”

“You didn’t mind.”

“No, I didn’t,” Danni agreed. “But my mother taught me that all good things come from hard work. We can’t expect things to be handed to us on a silver platter.”

“Your mom was a pretty smart cookie.”

“I think so.”

They stood quietly for a moment, content to watch the baby get her fill.

“I heard there was some bad blood between our families,” Danni began.

At this statement, Seth took an uneasy breath.

She turned to face him. “I hope you don’t think I want to carry it on. It seems silly since we both have to live here. I hope we can be friends.”

“I’d...I’d like that,” Seth heard himself agree.

Danni nodded.

Their eyes met, and he suddenly saw her in a new light.
